David Amess, 69, succumbed to his injuries from a stabbing attack Friday afternoon.

The Conservative member of parliament, for Southend West was meeting with constituents at Belfairs Methodist Church in Southend-on-Sea, east of London, when he was attacked.

Constituents watched in horror as the attacker stabbed Amess several times, as they called the police. The MP's death was confirmed at around 3pm local time.

Police arrested the attacker at the scene and seized a weapon. “We were called to an address in Eastwood Road North shortly after 12:05 p.m. today ( October 15),” Essex Police said in an official statement. “We attended and found a man injured. He was treated by emergency services but, sadly, died at the scene. A 25-year-old Somali immigrant was quickly arrested after officers arrived at the scene on suspicion of murder and a knife was recovered.” Police have not ruled out Islamic terror-motives behind the stabbing.

Amess, a pro-life social conservative and Roman Catholic, entered Parliament in 1983 as the MP for Basildon. He held the seat in 1992, but switched to nearby Southend West at the 1997 election. The MP is survived by his wife and five children.
