Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have resumed large-scale bombing in Gaza, resulting in over 400 casualties, including many women and children, after the ceasefire talks collapsed.
Hospitals in Gaza are overwhelmed, with limited medical supplies and facilities struggling to handle the influx of casualties.
The Israeli military said that the strikes were in response to Hamas's refusal to release Israeli hostages. US President Donald Trump was reportedly consulted by the Israeli government before the attacks, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Netanyahu warned that the strikes are "only the beginning" and that Israel will continue to fight until Hamas releases all hostages and is no longer a threat to Israel.
The strikes began in the early hours of Tuesday, and are described as the deadliest since the ceasefire came into effect in January.
The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres strongly appealed for the ceasefire to be respected and for humanitarian assistance to be reestablished. The UK foreign office minister Lord Collins of Highbury called the civilian casualties "appalling".
Critics suggest that Netanyahu's decision to resume attacks is influenced by domestic political factors, including his need for support from right-wing allies and his ongoing corruption trial.
