The 25-year-old suspect, who live-streamed the deadly event that happened at around 8:30 a.m, killed five people and injured several others. He was still firing shots when police responded, according to LMPD Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel.

"We then returned fire and stopped that threat," the chief said.  "The suspect is deceased. This is the only time that I will mention the suspect name in this case: Connor Sturgeon, white male, 25 years of age, who was employed at Old National Bank." Police has not made public the suspect's motive.

Images taken in the area showed a police officer with his weapon drawn. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) also were photographed at the scene.

The FBI's Louisville office tweeted that its "special agents have responded to the scene of this morning's shooting in downtown Louisville and are assisting our law enforcement partners."

A witness inside the building where the shooting happened told WHAS11 that an unidentified man with a "long assault rifle" began opening fire on the first floor.

"He just started firing," the witness reportedly said. "I didn't see his face. We were in the conference room. Whoever was next to me got shot, their blood's on me."

Another witness told WHAS11 that the suspect and law enforcement got into a "shootout."

The victims killed Monday were identified as Tommy Elliott, 63; Joshua Barrick, 40; Jim Tutt, 64 and 45-year-old Juliana Farmer. All were bank employees.

"This shouldn’t continue to happen," said Gwinn-Villaroel during an afternoon press conference. "Evil cannot take over our city."

Louisville Hospital reportedly received nine patients following the shooting, three of which have since been discharged.

The officer injured was identified as Nickolas Wilt, who underwent brain surgery after he was shot in the head. He graduated from the police academy on March 31, Gwinn-Villaroel said. "The next few days ... are critical for his recovery."

President Joe Biden said in a statement: "Jill and I are praying for those killed and injured in the tragic shooting in Louisville, and for the survivors who will carry grief and trauma for the rest of their lives. We are grateful to the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department officers who quickly and courageously stepped into the line of fire to save others."

Sturgeon had reportedly revealed his intention to shoot up the building in social media posts. The woke 25-year-old has 'He/Him' pronouns on his LinkedIn bio.
