Canelo Alvarez Beats Jermell Charlo, Retains Super Middleweight Boxing  Championship Title

Keneci News

Undisputed super middleweight world champion Canelo Alvarez, 33, faced off against undisputed junior middleweight world champion Jermell Charlo, 33, in a Premier Boxing Champions event Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The Mexican defeated Charlo by unanimous decision (119-108, 118-109, 118-109) to retain his title.

Alvarez(60-2-2, 39 KOs) dominated the fight; backing Charlo(35-1-1, 19 KOs) into the ropes time and time again, while landing power punches especially to the body of the American.

That body work drained Charlo, exposing his head which Canelo hit on a number of occasions, including for the only knockdown of the fight in the seventh round, when the Mexican dropped Charlo to a knee after landing a hard overhand right.

Charlo, who hadn't fought since his victory against Brian Castano in May 2022, landed a few big punches throughout, but nothing that put Alvarez into massive jeopardy. He however never opened up much to give the Mexican a KO opportunity.

Canelo won a unanimous decision (119-108, 118-109, 118-109) to retain his unified super middleweight title. “Nobody can beat this Canelo,” he said after the fight.

“I just felt like I wasn’t me in there," Charlo said. “I don’t make excuses for myself, so it is what it is. I take my punches and roll with it.” His twin brother Jermall was originally expected to fight Alvarez.

Charlo said he would love to take on 40-0 Terence Crawford, the reigning welterweight and super welterweight champion. “I’ll move back to 154 (pounds),” he said. “This morning, I weighed like 172 or 173 pounds. I’ll grandfather myself into this. I’m proud of myself. He didn’t knock me out. He knocked all them other guys out. He hit me with some hard shots. I thought I got mine off.”

In undercard fights of the evening: Erickson Lubin defeated Jesus Ramos via unanimous decision (117-111, 116-112, 115-112); Mario Barrios prevailed against Yordenis Ugas via unanimous decision (117-108, 118-107, 118-107); and Elijah Garcia beat Armando Resendiz via eighth-round TKO.
