Nico Williams put Spain ahead early in the second half of the Euro 2024 final in Berlin Sunday, with a strike; but Cole Palmer's brilliant leveller brought the English back to life, and was set to send the game into extra time. But Mikel Oyarzabal pounced four minutes from full time, to score a late winner snatching a 2-1 victory for the Spanish team.
With this loss, England has failed to end '58 years of hurt' as the 1966 World Cup remains their only men's trophy. This was the second European Championship final in a row that Gareth Southgate's side have lost, after falling to Italy on penalties in 2021.
The country has yet to win senior football tournament abroad, with the 1966 success and Women's Euro 2022 final -- which England won -- were both at Wembley.
It is another agonizing loss for one of the world’s most underperforming national teams, this one coming in front of Prince William and Spain’s King Felipe at the venue built for the 1936 Olympics.
Spain won a record fourth European Championship title with Sunday's victory, as the country also won the title in 1964, 2008 and 2012.
