Outrage over the Netflix movie Cuties escalated over the weekend as calls grow for the video streaming giant to be investigated by the Department of Justice, DOJ.

The French film, which debuted on Netflix on September 9, follows a 11-year-old who rebels against her family's traditions when she becomes fascinated with a free-spirited dance crew of minors.

Cuties features among many raunchy scenes, an extended dance sequence showing the underage girls gyrating erotically on stage while performing simulated masturbation.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz in a letter to U.S. Attorney William Barr, asked the DOJ to investigate if executives or filmmakers violated federal laws against production and distribution of child pornography.

“The film routinely fetishizes and sexualizes these pre-adolescent girls as they perform dances simulating sexual conduct in revealing clothing, including at least one scene with partial child nudity," Cruz wrote. "These scenes in and of themselves are harmful. And it is likely that the filming of this movie created even more explicit and abusive scenes, and that pedophiles across the world in the future will manipulate and imitate this film in abusive ways.”

“As you know, the Department of Justice has a significant role in preventing the sexual abuse of children," the senator added in the letter. "The Department enforces federal criminal law making it a serious crime to produce or distribute material involving the sexual exploitation of minors, including the filming of minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct.”

Since the release of the movie which many agree promotes pedophilia, critics online have been calling on Netflix to pull it from their platform.

Cuties is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement. “It’s an award-winning film and a powerful story about the pressure young girls face on social media and from society more generally growing up -- and we’d encourage anyone who cares about these important issues to watch the movie.”

But in two appearances on far left outlet CNN, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings was not asked about the controversy surrounding the movie.

The movie's director Maïmouna Doucouré in an interview with Zora said: “I realize that the people who have started this controversy haven’t yet seen the film. Netflix has apologized to the public and to myself. I’m hoping that these people will watch the movie now that it’s out. I’m eager to see their reaction when they realize that we’re both on the same side of this fight against young children’s hypersexualization.”

Other Republican lawmakers have also slammed Netflix for releasing the sexually charged movie.

Missouri Senator Josh Hawley sent a letter to Reed Hastings asking him to remove Cuties from the streaming service.

Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton and Indiana Representative Jim Banks in a statement to Daily Caller, also called on the DOJ to bring legal action against Netflix for releasing the movie.

"As a father of three young daughters, I find Cuties sickening," Banks tweeted. "Glad to join @SenTomCotton in calling on the DOJ to bring charges against Netflix for distribution of child pornography."

"Like any parent, I find ⁦@netflix⁩ decision to peddle child pornography disgusting, Cotton tweeted. "And it’s criminal. ⁦@TheJusticeDept⁩ should take swift action."

On her Fox news show Friday night, Laura Ingraham argued that Cuties "takes us one step closer to fully pornified culture.”

“I don’t know who else but pedophiles and creeps would want to make a dime off this garbage, she said. "Well, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, that’s who.

Ingraham also called out former president Barack Obama and wife Michelle who have a production deal with with Netflix, for their silence over the film release.

“Democrats will always side with pornographers over the regular people,” Ingraham said. “Somewhere along the line, Hollywood and the word ‘decency’ ran in the opposite directions.

"And remember this: as in the Obama years and in a Biden administration, people like Netflix CEO Hastings, he’ll have open door access to press his pet causes. he’ll seek to influence Biden on all manner of social issues, race relations and a lot of other things, because only in the entertainment bubble would a guy who profits off the exploitation of children on film still believe he has any moral authority.”

While most of the critics of the film are Republican, Democrat Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard blasted Netflix, revealing she has canceled her subscription to the streaming service. “@netflix child porn Cuties will certainly whet the appetite of pedophiles & help fuel the child sex trafficking trade," she tweeted. "1 in 4 victims of trafficking are children. It happened to my friend’s 13 year old daughter. Netflix, you are now complicit.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's daughter, Christine Pelosi surprisingly joined the 'pile-on.'

"Hi @netflix, from a customer and former ADA in SFDA’a Child Abuse-Sexual Assault Unit: “Cuties” hypersexualizes girls my daughter’s age no doubt to the delight of pedophiles like the ones I prosecuted," she tweeted. "Cancel this, apologize, work with experts to heal your harm. #CancelNetflix."

A Change.org petition to Remove Cuties From Netflix and charge them with distribution and exploiting minors, has since attracted more than 600,000 signatures.
