The actor resigned Friday, from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences after slapping standup comedian Chris Rock during the Oscars.

“I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate,” Smith announced in a statement. “The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home.”

Smith said he “betrayed” the trust of the Academy and “deprived” nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate.

David Rubin, the president of the Academy, also released a statement indicating that Smith may still be formally punished.

“We will continue to move forward with our disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, in advance of our next scheduled board meeting on April 18,” Rubin announced in a statement.

Some of Smith's contracts are now on the line too. The actor has reportedly had a Netflix film and a movie for Sony put on hold.

Smith was to play a crime boss with a memory problem, in Fast and Loose. David Leitch withdrew from the project ahead of the Academy Awards, and Netflix was in the process of finding a new director.

Sony is also putting the brakes on Bad Boys 4, and Emancipation, -- the slave drama made for Apple+, which has already been completed.
