Cognitive decline of US president Joe Biden was on full display Thursday, during the presidential debate against his Republican opponent in the upcoming 2024 elections, Donald Trump. There were several heated moments and pointed jabs as they discussed a variety of topics, including immigration and the border, abortion, the war in Ukraine, Israel, and their respective records in office.
During one heated exchange, Trump said Biden and his fellow Democrats support late term abortion. "So that means he can take the life of the baby in the ninth month and even after birth?" He said. "Because some states Democrat-run take it after birth. The former governor of Virginia: ‘put the baby down, then we decide what to do with it.’ So, he’s willing to, as we say, rip the baby out of the womb in the ninth month and kill the baby. Nobody wants that to happen — Democrat or Republican. Nobody wants that to happen."
However Biden denied the claim, saying "You’re lying. That is simply not true;" and that he is "not for a late-term abortion — period. Period."
Biden hit Trump over the various court cases he is involved in, including the widely condemned corrupt New York trial that ended with Trump's conviction for falsifying business records. However, Trump shot back at Biden, claiming, "I didn't have sex with a porn star."
Trump continued, "He was so bad with Afghanistan," he said of Biden administration's handing of US military exit from the country, calling it "such a horrible embarrassment."
"He should have fired those generals like I fired the one that you mentioned, and so he's got no love lost, but he should have fired those generals," he added. "No general got fired for the most embarrassing moment in the history of our country, Afghanistan, where we left billions of dollars of equipment behind. We lost 13 beautiful soldiers and 38 soldiers were obliterated."
Trump went on to say that the world is "blowing up" under President Biden.
"Joe could be a convicted felon with all of the things that he’s done," Trump said. "This man is a criminal. This man -- you’re lucky. You’re lucky. I did nothing wrong. We’d have a system that was rigged and disgusting. I did nothing wrong."
Biden shot back, "the idea that I did anything wrong is outrageous." He added, "You ever heard so much malarkey in my whole life?"
What dominated the chatter on social media however, was Biden's jumbled words and a general frail appearance which was in stark contrast to Trump throughout the 90-minute debate.
His debate performance Thursday night, is just the latest in a string of incidents that have led many to speculate on Biden's health. His time in office has been punctuated by falls, gaffes and unusual behaviour, particularly in recent months.
In one viral moment of the TV debate, Biden produced a rambling response to a Medicare question.
"We've been making sure we are able to make every single person eligible what I've been able to do with the Covid, excuse me, everything we have to do with...look... I finally beat Medicare..." he said before trailing off.
Another serious fumble came when Biden spoke about the US open border crisis which his administration caused.
"We had significant increase in number of asylum officers significantly," he said. "By the way the Border Patrol been endorsed me, endorsed my position. In addition to that we find ourselves in a situation where when he was president he was taking separating babies from their mothers put him in cages."
This led Trump to respond: "I really don't know what he said at the end of that sentence. I don't think he knows what he said either."
Following the debate, critics, even Biden's far-left supporters and Democrat activists in the left-wing media acknowledged the president's mental deterioration.
Some panicked Democrat party activists and media talking heads have called for Biden to step down from the presidential race.
