[Update] Rishi Sunak Gives First Speech As British Prime Minister: Vows To Fix Predecessor's Mistakes

Sunak 42, met with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, on Tuesday, officially becoming the prime minister of the United Kingdom. In his first speech outside No 10, he said the UK was facing a "profound economic crisis" and that he would fix some of Liz Truss's mistakes.

In a short farewell speech earlier, Truss defended her legacy and the controversial tax cut push, saying that leaders had to be bold.

Sunak has already started assembling his cabinet after many of Truss's ministers resigned or were fired. His former leadership rival Penny Mordaunt remains leader of the House of Commons.

Jeremy Hunt who replaced Kwasi Kwarteng as chancellor under Truss, is remaining in his post. Suella Braverman is reappointed as home secretary, a week after resigning from the same role; and Grant Shapps replaces Jacob Rees-Mogg as business secretary.

Conservatives around the United Kingdom took to social media Monday, to show their displeasure with their members of parliament, after Rishi Sunak emerged as the next Tory party leader and prime minister, following announcement by Penny Mordaunt in the final minutes before nominations closed, that she's dropping out of the Tory leadership race.

The ex-chancellor of the Exchequer under Boris Johnson's premiership, gained the support of well over half of Tory MPs. He will become the UK's first Asian British PM and at 42, the youngest in more than a century.

Sunak will succeed outgoing PM Liz Truss seven weeks after she defeated him in the previous Tory contest.

By the ex-chancellor emerging as the last man standing in the Tory party leadership race, voters say they have been denied an opportunity to choose their party leader and PM.

Normally two candidates nominated by the party's members of parliament are presented to Conservative Party voters around the country who vote for either of the candidates to become party leader. Critics allege Sunak's win is a 'stitch-up' by party elites to chose their favorite malleable candidate.

The opposition Labor Party have reiterated their call for a general election, as have the Scottish National Party and the Liberal Democrats.
