Donald Trump attended the ceremonial reopening of the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, Saturday. The event marked the restoration of the cathedral after a devastating fire in 2019. The US President-elect was joined by other world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Prince William, the Prince of Wales.
The Notre Dame cathedral reopening ceremony included the ritualized opening of the cathedral’s huge doors, the reawakening of its thunderous organ, and the celebration of the first mass. Over 1,500 guests attended the event, including actress Salma Hayek and her husband, French fashion magnate Francois-Henri Pinault.
First Lady Jill Biden represented his husband and President Joe Biden at the ceremony. She was accompanied by their daughter Ashley. During the ceremony, both were seated in the same row as-and-chatting with Trump who was seated between French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron.
During the event, Trump met with Prince William, describing him as a “good man” who is doing a “fantastic job.” The two had a 40-minute discussion at the British ambassador’s residence, where they reportedly touched on the importance of the US-UK “special relationship.”
Prince William’s last official visit to Paris was in 2017, when he traveled with his wife, Princess Catherine, for a two-day trip in the aftermath of the Brexit result.
Trump also met with Macron on Saturday, with whom he held an impromptu meeting with Zelenskyy. The meeting was seen as an opportunity for Macron and other European leaders to cultivate the U.S. president-elect’s favor and persuade him to maintain support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.
The incoming U.S. president promised during his presidential campaign, to help bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.
