[Update]  Twitter's Content Moderation Chief Ella Irwin, Out At The Company Following Dispute With Daily Wire Over 'What Is a Woman' Documentary Streaming

Ella Irwin, Twitter’s head of trust and safety, has reportedly left the company. This comes hours after Elon Musk intervened following the social media platform's move to throttle Daily Wire's streaming of the hit documentary, What Is a Woman?

Irwin oversaw content moderation on Twitter and her team is reportedly responsible for canceling a deal with Daily Wire to prominently promote the streaming of What Is a Woman on the social media platform on Thursday. She has faced criticisms in the past over her content moderation decisions; and many users have called for her firing.

Responding Friday, to a Twitter user who wondered if Irwin's ouster is related to the dispute with Daily Wire, Musk simply tweeted, "Director related." It's unclear what that means.

The woke executive resigned after Musk acquired Twitter but later returned to the company.

Daily Wire tweeted the What Is a Woman documentary at about 0013 UTC Friday; and within minutes, the post was "visibility limited" by Twitter.

"We’re updating the system tomorrow so that those who follow @realDailyWire will see this in their feed, but it won’t be recommended to non-followers (nor will any advertising be associated with it)," Musk wrote responding to a user who pointed out that Daily Wire's tweet is restricted and can't be interacted with.

The Twitter CEO however contradicted his earlier promise and new Twitter rule that so-called 'misgendering' is no longer a violation.

"Commenting & deliberate sharing will be allowed," Musk tweeted. "Sensitive content just won’t be pushed to people unless they ask for it or a friend sends it to them."

Critics were quick to call out the Twitter CEO for suggesting that stating the biological fact of the existence of a man and woman, is "sensitive content."

"Elon, have you seen the film?" What Is a Woman presenter Matt Walsh asked Musk in a quote-tweet. "What is 'sensitive' about it? There is content widely shared that shows up on feeds every single day that is far more outrageous and offensive than anything in the film. What specifically is the problem with the movie?"

The Twitter CEO has since given an update on the status of the Daily Wire tweet and the streaming of What Is a Woman on the social media platform, in a reply tweet to Walsh Friday morning, "Works now. Only limit now is that itwill not be placed next to advertising," he wrote.

Daily Wire co-CEO Jeremy Boreing revealed Thursday that Twitter canceled a deal with the conservative media company to prominently promote the streaming of its hit documentary What is a Woman on the social media platform. Apparently some woke executives at the social media company reviewed and were triggered by two instances of “misgendering” in the Matt Walsh's documentary.

According to Boreing, the Daily Wire sought a deal to stream the documentary on Twitter for its one-year anniversary. Initially, Twitter responded enthusiastically to the idea, even offering The Daily Wire a package to purchase a whole page for Twitter users to view the film.

However, the CEO revealed that after Twitter asked to view a screening of the film, the social media company "let us know that not only could we no longer purchase the package they offered, they would no longer provide us any support and would actually limit the reach of the film and label it as ‘hateful conduct’ because of ‘misgendering.’” Boreing wrote. “Specifically: In the film, a father refers to his 14-year-old daughter as ‘her,’ and a store owner uses the ‘wrong’ pronoun in a confrontation with a transgender woman.”

Twitter owner and CEO Elon Musk has since responded to Boreing's tweet. Apparently the decision to cancel the deal with Daily Wire was made some woke executive(s) at the social media company.

“This was a mistake by many people at Twitter," Musk wrote responding to Boreing's tweet. "It is definitely allowed. Whether or not you agree with using someone’s preferred pronouns, not doing so is at most rude and certainly breaks no laws.”

Musk appeared to suggest he's aware of the push and pull on content moderation with the remaining woke executives at Twitter. Responding to a user who tweeted, “Imagine being Elon. You go to sleep thinking everything is in good hands, and when you wake up everything is on fire;” the Twitter replied: "Happens a lot 🤣🤣"

Earlier this month, Musk drew criticisms after he named Linda Yaccarino, an NBC Universal executive and World Economic Forum official as Twitter's new CEO. He urged users of the social media platform concerned about censorship, to not be quick to judge his new hire, and promised to hold a Twitter Spaces Q&A with her when she officially takes over later in June.
