Microsoft Releases File Recovery Tool For Windows 10 Devices

The command line app Windows File Recovery, WFR, would come in handy for when you accidentally delete an important document, or wiped a drive clean by mistake.

WFR can be used to recover JPEG, MP3, MP4, PDF, and the usual microsoft office document files. It can recover files from your local hard drives, USB drives and SD cards. It can also recover files from a corrupted disk or after you’ve formatted a disk.

The app is set to a default mode designed primarily for NTFS file systems. But a second 'signature mode' allows users to recover specific file types across FAT, exFAT, and ReFS file systems.

Windows File Recovery does not support recovery of files on cloud storage or network file shares.

The app requires administrative privileges. After installing it from the app store, you will need to launch a Windows 10 elevated command prompt to use it.
