Nintendo Switch 2: Notable Upgrades Over The Original Switch

Nintendo recently launched Switch 2, second generation of their popular gaming device, bringing significant upgrades over the original Switch. The new console features a larger 7.9-inch 1080p LCD screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10 support, making it a substantial visual improvement.

Switch 2 includes a custom NVIDIA processor, 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and 256GB of UFS storage expandable via microSD Express cards up to 2TB., enhancing both performance and capacity. The device weighs approximately 401 grams(g) (console only) or 534 grams(g) with controllers.

The custom NVIDIA processor and increased RAM result in smoother gameplay and faster load times. Titles like Fortnite and Rocket League may run much better on the Switch 2, with improved frame rates and visual fidelity.

The Switch 2 measures 116mm x 272mm x 13.9mm with Joy-Con 2 attached. A wide color gamut LCD screen with 1920x1080 resolution, and up to 3840x2160 (4K) at 60 fps in docked mode; 1920x1080 or 2560x1440 at up to 120 fps in docked mode; Up to 1920x1080 (native screen resolution) in handheld/Tabletop mode.

The 7.9-inch 1080p screen is a significant upgrade, offering sharper and more vibrant visuals compared to the original Switch. The higher refresh rate and HDR support enhance the overall gaming experience.

On the connections and sensors front, the device has 2 USB Type-C ports (bottom for charging and dock connection, top for accessories and charging). It has accelerometer, gyroscope, and mouse sensor in each Joy-Con 2; and brightness sensor in the console.

The Joy-Con 2 is larger, with optical sensors that allow them to function as mice, and HD Rumble 2.

The Switch 2 Pro Controller is a must-have for early adopters, while the Switch 2 Camera adds GameChat functionality.

Depending on game and usage, the battery lasts around 2 to 6.5 hours, with a charging time of about 3 hours.

Switch 2 will be fully backward compatible with the original Switch, supporting all existing games and Nintendo Online. While the launch lineup includes notable titles like Mario Kart World, the overall selection is somewhat underwhelming. The console's backward compatibility and improved performance with older games, however, make it a compelling upgrade for existing Switch owners.

The device is priced at $450 alone or $500 in a bundle with Mario Kart World, the headliner of the Nintendo Switch 2 launch games.
