[Update] Buffalo Shooter's Diary Debunks Left-wing Media's Narrative About The Attack

Following the shooting Saturday at Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo, New York, left-wing talking heads and politicians embarked on a smear campaign against the Republican Party and conservatives like Fox News host Tucker Carlson. They claimed the shooter was inspired and incited by right-wing rhetoric and the so-called "Great Replacement theory."

It turns out that from his 106-page manifesto and his newly revealed diary, Payton Gendron developed his beliefs from the left-wing online forum Reddit, and message board 4Chan.

“Of course, many of my beliefs come from reddit too," Gendron wrote in a diary entry labeled Jan. 30. "Many subreddits I joined have been banned but they show up on r/AgainstHateSubreddits all the time. One’s that are still around include r/greentext, r/4chan, r/PoliticalCompassMemes, r/SocialJusticeInAction, r/LoveForLandlords, and r/AntiHateCommunites, of which I am actually in their discord.”

The 18-year-old also wrote on Jan. 30: “My current beliefs started when I first started to use 4chan a few months after covid started. Many of which I got from 4chan’s /pol/ page and links found in /nsg/ and threads like that.”

Gendron hated the Republican party.

“It makes no sense how democrats and republicans see themselves so differently from each other yet they have 95% of the same views,” he wrote Feb. 19. “Ascend into eco fascism my brothers.”

“Same things applies with democrats vs republicans," he wrote March 7. "Both are controlled by Jews.”

The 18-year-old shared what appears to be the results of a quiz which showed his political views to be far-left and slightly authoritarian.

“I don’t think this is that inaccurate to my political beliefs," he wrote in another post.

In a March 31 post, Gendron said he had visited a Reddit page about mass killers in preparation for his attack.

“Look at what people did before tou, [sic] I’m trying to find info on other mass shooters and see what they did and what to improve on. r/masskillers is very helpful,” he wrote. “Imagine if I went in on March 15 not knowing my gun wasn’t properly lubed and I had a failure to feed on every shot I took, that would be quite embarrassing.”

The 18-year-old appeared to have a moment of self-reflection at one point.

“I almost spent a year planning this attack,” he wrote April 26. “Oh how time flies, if I could go back maybe I’d tell myself to get the fuck off 4chan and worldtruthvideos and get an actual life. Too late for that now.”

Discord, the chat platform where Gendron kept the diary, confirmed Wednesday that he sent out an invitation to access his private writings to a small group of people about a half-hour before he carried out the attack, Saturday. Some of them accepted.

“What we know at this time is that a private, invite-only server was created by the suspect to serve as a personal diary chat log,” a Discord spokesperson said in a written statement. “Approximately 30 minutes prior to the attack, however, a small group of people were invited to and joined the server. Before that, our records indicate no other people saw the diary chat log in this private server.”

Gendron livestreamed the attack on streaming platform Twitch.

Twitch CEO Emmett Shear told the Harvard Business Review in an interview earlier on Wednesday that the Amazon-owned platform would continue to “invest heavily in ensuring the safety of everyone on Twitch.”

“I think this is an example of one of those places where we’ve done a lot of work, but there is obviously still work to be done,” She said.

Gendron remains jailed under suicide watch. He was arraigned over the weekend on a murder charge. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.

According to Buffalo police, the suspect Payton Gendron, 18, drove “hours” to carry out the attack on Saturday, at Tops Friendly Market. The heavily armed teen livestreamed the carnage on Amazon's streaming platform Twitch.

Upon reaching the grocery store at around 2:30 pm, the suspect immediately began firing off shots. He shot four people in the parking lot, three of whom died later, the Buffalo police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said at a press conference. The suspect then went inside the store and exchanged gunfire with a retired local police officer, who worked in the store as a security guard. The guard hit the suspect with at least one round, but the suspect’s “armor plating” protected him from the bullet.

Gendron killed 10 people and wounded 3, during the carnage in a predominantly black neighborhood. Law enforcement officials say the shooting will be investigated as a hate crime.

The suspect reportedly scrawled on the barrel of his rifle, the names of two of the victims of the Waukesha Christmas parade shooting last November.

In an ideological manifesto he apparently uploaded before the attack Saturday, Gendron described himself as a "communist" and left-wing "authoritarian." The 18-year-old suspect is also reportedly interested in eco-terrorism.

Sceptics online have suggested the whole incident and the manifesto seem too contrived and 'perfect' to not be something deliberately orchestrated by a group or government agency who wants to exaggerate the threat of 'white supremacy,' and the need for more control over the flow of information. Of course such suggestions are rightly or wrongly dismissed as conspiracy theories?

The 18-year-old suspect who is from Conklin, New York, was hospitalized for a mental health evaluation for one-and-a-half days in June 2021, after he made a "generalized threat" in his hometown, according to police chief Gramaglia.
