King Charles III has formally stripped Prince Andrew of his royal style, titles, and honours, including the title of Prince and the style "His Royal Highness," following renewed scrutiny over his associations with deceased sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. The decision, announced by Buckingham Palace on Thursday, mandates that Andrew, now known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, vacate his residence at Royal Lodge and relocate to private accommodation on the King’s Sandringham estate, with the move expected to occur "as soon as practicable."
The palace stated that these censures are deemed necessary despite Andrew’s continued denial of the sexual abuse allegations in connection with Epstein, emphasizing the royal family’s unwavering support for victims and survivors of abuse.
The move marks the most significant royal disciplinary action since 1919, when Prince Ernest Augustus lost his British title for siding with Germany during World War I, and is unprecedented for a British prince losing his title due to "serious lapses of judgement" rather than abdication or treason.
The decision follows a series of damaging revelations, including the posthumous publication of Virginia Giuffre’s memoir, Nobody’s Girl, in which she alleges she was trafficked by Epstein and forced into sexual encounters with Andrew on three occasions, including an "orgy" on Epstein’s island, and described Andrew’s behavior as entitled and exploitative.
Despite denying the allegations, Andrew had previously stepped back from royal duties after a widely criticized 2019 BBC interview and settled a civil lawsuit with Giuffre in 2022 for an undisclosed sum, without admitting guilt but expressing regret for her suffering as a victim of sex trafficking.
New evidence emerged in October 2025 showing Andrew had remained in contact with Epstein via email as late as February 2011, contradicting his earlier claim that their contact ended in 2010, and reports revealed he hosted Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell at Royal Lodge during his daughter Beatrice’s 18th birthday in 2006, just months after a U.S. arrest warrant was issued for Epstein.
The lease for Royal Lodge, a 30-room mansion, required only a symbolic "one peppercorn" rent annually after Andrew paid £8.5 million ($11 million) upfront, prompting parliamentary scrutiny and public criticism over the arrangement’s fairness.
Andrew’s daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, will retain their royal titles under the Letters Patent of 1917, and he remains eighth in line to the throne, though he could be removed by an Act of Parliament.
The formal process was initiated after weeks of mounting pressure, with King Charles acting swiftly following internal consultations, and Prince William reportedly fully supportive of his father’s decision.
